Certified Health and Safety Auditor Application Process

A. Internal

Internal (maintenance) auditors are able to perform internal audits for the company at which they are employed full time.

Conditions

NOTE: Applications should be received two months prior to the scheduled date of the preferred Certified Health and Safety Auditor Course.

At least one of the following needs to be completed prior to registration in the Certified Health and Safety Auditor course:

- The Enform Safety Program Development course;

- A certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health and Safety;

- A designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent

Supporting Documents

Letter of Employment - Internal Auditors must be employed full-time by the organization requiring a maintenance (Internal) auditor, (the employee may only conduct maintenance audits for his/her company for which they are currently employed). Attach a copy of a

Letter of Employment confirming full-time employment on the next page.

Confirmation of COR/Audit Registration - If the organization has, or is pursuing a COR, you will asked to upload proof on the next page of the application.

B. External

External auditors are able to perform certification audits, renewal and maintenance audits for any company.

Conditions

The Certified Health and Safety Auditor Training Program has been developed in response to a need expressed by Canada's Upstream Oil and Gas Industry. Pre-audit planning, conducting the audit (documentation review, employee interviews and worksite observations) and post-audit reporting are included in the training. This five-day training course is designed to improve and standardize auditing techniques and skills.

Once the application is approved, an applicant must register for the CHSA, 5-day course within four (4) months of the approval date. The actual course must be completed within one (1) year of the approval date. Applicants who do not register for the CHSA course within four months, or do not complete the CHSA course within one year, are considered to have abandoned the process, and must reapply.

Eligibility

See full eligibility requirements to become an External Auditor.

To become an External Auditor, applicants must:

-be a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or hold a University of Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Certificate or equivalent for either requirement listed above and have spent five of the past 10 years practising health and safety.
or
-be recognized as a Certified Health & Safety Management System Auditor (CHSMSA) designation with at least a two-year diploma/degree in an unrelated major from an accredited college/university and five of the past 10 years practising health and safety.
or
-hold a valid CHSMSA designation and demonstrate practicing health and safety for seven of the past 10 years.
